Production and industrial halls
Production and industrial halls are designed in many ways and are always adapted to the requirements of production. These types of halls can be single-storey, two-storey, with built-in structures or extensions. Production halls often include overhead cranes of various load capacities, different lifting platforms, or rotating mechanisms and hoists. The halls are usually well insulated and well-lit. Emphasis is placed on fire resistance.
Main Advantages of Prefabricated Production Halls
- Speed of construction and the associated cost compared to traditional masonry buildings
- Possibility of layout solutions – built-in structures, extensions, and mezzanines
- Possibility to use various types of lifting equipment integrated directly into the hall structure
- Excellent thermal properties of the buildings with low operating costs
- Easy maintenance
- Low costs for building foundations compared to traditional buildings
Structure of Production and Industrial Halls
The structure of prefabricated production halls is adapted to the requirements of production processes. The structure is often used to directly support overhead cranes, minimizing the use of additional columns in the production halls and emphasizing the economical use of space. The height of production halls and structures is flexible and the type of structure is often chosen according to the width and height of the hall, the overhead crane, or the foundation in complex geotechnical conditions at the construction site. The structure often includes steel crane tracks of various load capacities from 1 ton up to 25 tons or more.
Production halls are often multi-bay, with each production section having its own overhead crane or a combination of several cranes on a single crane track.
Insulation of Production and Industrial Halls
The cladding of production and industrial halls is designed in many ways. It depends on the roof slope, hall width, fire resistance, and many other attributes that determine the use of each material. Most often, the deciding factor is the price/thermal properties in combination with fire resistance.
The most commonly used for walls:
- Classic sandwich panels with mineral wool or PIR core of various thicknesses
- Less often, composite cladding – C-cassettes, thermal insulation, and trapezoidal sheet metal
For the roof, two types are usually chosen:
- Sandwich panel on roofs with a slope >5° with PIR foam core or mineral wool
- Composite cladding with membrane for slopes <5°, in combination or separately – mineral wool and EPS polystyrene
Openings and Daylighting
Openings in production halls play a crucial role because people work in the halls and, for hygienic reasons, they need sufficient light for the specific type of production. Metalworking professions or food processors need less light, while mechanical, automotive, and other types of production require plenty of light.
Daylighting in production halls is most often provided by:
- Classic windows with ventilation
- Point skylights with ventilation in the roof
- Arched strip skylights with ventilation in the roof
An integral part of the openings are handling gates and doors for the movement of goods and employees, complemented by emergency exits as required by the fire safety solution of each hall.
Layout of Production and Industrial Halls
Production halls are very varied and are adapted to the requirements of the production processes of a particular company or industry. The production area often includes built-in facilities for production supervisors, as well as various warehouses and extensions. Production halls often feature material handling and lifting equipment such as overhead cranes, rotating lifting devices, freight elevators, or rack stackers.
Surfaces of Production and Industrial Halls
Floors in production halls are mostly made of steel fiber-reinforced concrete of various thicknesses with a hardener that prevents dusting. For higher quality requirements of the floor, various epoxy or acrylic coatings are supplied.
