Warehouse halls
Warehouse Halls and Logistics Centers have dominated construction in the Czech Republic in this century. The Czech Republic is a transit country in the heart of Europe, and thanks to this location, many international companies have their central warehouses and logistics centers here, mostly near highways. Smaller warehouses are needed by every company engaged in trade or manufacturing, so this type of prefabricated hall is the most popular. Warehouse halls are often situated about 1 meter above the surrounding roads due to loading goods into trucks and are equipped with doors and loading docks.
Main Advantages of Prefabricated Warehouse Halls
- The most suitable materials are used in construction, designed specifically for warehouse halls
- Speed of construction and the associated cost compared to traditional masonry buildings
- Excellent thermal properties of the buildings with low operating costs
- Easy maintenance
- Low costs for building foundations compared to traditional buildings
Construction of Prefabricated Warehouse Halls
The structure of prefabricated warehouse halls is adapted for simplicity and especially for warehouse management. In the case of using columns—structures in the middle of the halls—the columns are placed where they will not obstruct, usually between racks. Warehouse halls, if the stored products are flammable, require higher fire resistance, usually R30 (fire resistance of 30 minutes). For such resistance, reinforced concrete structures are more suitable.
In warehouses where non-flammable materials are stored, the fire resistance of the structures is R15 (fire resistance of 15 minutes), and steel structures of many types are usually chosen here—frame, truss, or special.
Bridge cranes are usually not present in warehouse halls, except in warehouses for, for example, metallurgical materials.
Insulation of Warehouse Halls
Cladding of warehouse halls can be done in many ways. It depends on the size of the hall – width, length, and architectural design. Halls with foil usually have a parapet without visible gutters, and rainwater drainage pipes are routed inside the hall.
Smaller and medium-sized halls have a classic roof pitch, i.e. >5°, and the following can be used on the roof:
- For uninsulated halls, trapezoidal sheet metal, e.g. CB 45/333/0.75
- For insulated halls, PIR sandwich panels, e.g. Kingspan KS1000 RW
- Or mineral wool sandwich panels, e.g. Kingspan KS1000 FF
Larger halls have a classic roof pitch, i.e. <5°, and only a built-up type of roof with foil can be used:
- Thermal insulation from mineral wool boards with foil – fire resistance of the roof > 30 minutes
- Thermal insulation as a combination of mineral wool boards and polystyrene with foil – fire resistance of the roof 0 - 30 minutes
- Thermal insulation from EPS100 polystyrene – no fire resistance requirements
Fillings and Daylighting
Warehouse halls place emphasis on the efficiency of stocking, picking, and storage itself. Therefore, special doors are used for these types of halls:
- Sectional doors with hydraulic bridges and seals
- High-speed doors in partitions
- Fire protection shutters, etc.
Daylighting is mainly provided through the roof using skylights of various types. Often, the hall is completely without daylighting and is illuminated only by LED lights.
Layout of the Warehouse Hall
Warehouse halls or logistics centers place emphasis on the efficiency of stored goods. There are often partitions in the halls that separate goods that must not come into contact with each other. These partitions are also fire-resistant, and any openings in them must be fitted with fire protection shutters. Smaller halls are typically located together with production, but large logistics centers are above ground level to allow for easier handling with forklifts and transfer from trucks to the warehouse, as already mentioned. Warehouses are usually equipped with racks to maximize the use of storage space.
Surfaces of Warehouse Halls
The surfaces in warehouse halls are cast fiber-reinforced concrete floors of various thicknesses with a mineral hardener, which prevents dusting and makes the floor easy to maintain. Exceptionally, epoxy or acrylic coatings or other special types are used in the halls.
