Truss steel structures
Advantages of Truss Steel Structures
The main advantage of our designed truss structures is their use in large-span halls such as gyms, tennis or sports halls, even in combination with masonry elements. Furthermore, truss steel structures are used where classic frame halls cannot be utilized, for example as simple trusses on masonry buildings or reinforced concrete columns.
A truss structure consists of columns and spatial welded trusses. The columns are most often welded from rolled profiles IPE and HEA. The truss itself consists of an upper and lower chord, verticals, and diagonals. Most often, we design trusses where the upper and lower chords are made of UPE or HEA profiles, and the verticals and diagonals are made from square tubes, so-called "jakl". The sizes of the profiles are determined by our structural engineer according to the span and snow load. The individual modules are connected by tubes of various sizes. The secondary system of the hall is provided using METSEC purlins and girts.
Advantages of truss structures:
- Minimal horizontal forces – suitable for masonry buildings or in combination with reinforced concrete columns
- Low moment effects on foundation structures, which allows for significant optimization of foundation dimensions
- Possibility to suspend a ceiling or technology from the lower structure (bottom chord)
- Versatile use for spans from 18m up to 60m and more
- Variable modulation of the distance between individual frames according to the investor’s needs, from 4 to 9 m
- Possibility of extending the hall in the future
- Spatial structures are, from an architectural point of view, very aesthetic
- Low weight of the structure for large spans
Disadvantages of truss structures:
- Lower fire resistance, max R15 minutes without the use of fire protection measures (coatings, claddings)
- Lower space utilization compared to frame halls
- Higher labor intensity when assembling and welding individual parts of the truss
Quality Truss Steel Structures
On our website, you can find in the photo gallery a number of already completed projects, not only new constructions but also insulated buildings or examples of individual materials. Among the interesting projects is a truss structure that was built on the existing reinforced concrete skeleton of a former tower in Ostrava. Here, we took advantage of all the benefits of the truss structure and, using secondary METSEC purlins, achieved spatial rigidity of the structure and turned an unsightly concrete torso into a functional building again.
